Andaz Prague is one of the most thoughtfully conceived luxury hotels in Central Europe — housed in the historic Sugar Palace, a cultural monument in the heart of Prague’s historical centre that stood empty for nearly two decades before its transformation into a luxury lifestyle hotel in 2022. A Hyatt Privé property reviewed over three nights by Steve Michailidis, a London-based luxury travel advisor, it combines the Andaz brand’s signature complimentary minibar and locally-rooted design with interiors that weave Prague’s mythology — the Golem, Princess Libuše, and the two-tailed white lion — into every corridor and room. For travellers choosing between Prague’s luxury hotels, it is the most characterful and culturally considered option in the city.

As a city, Prague embodies the essence of a fairy tale. With its picturesque architecture, cobblestone streets, and a rich history, it’s no wonder that the city leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

I have recently returned from a whistle stop tour of Europe, conducting destination research and visiting various hotels in each city. Prague was the final stop of my trip where I spent 3 nights at the luxury lifestyle hotel Andaz Prague. Did I leave the best hotel for last? Read on to find out!

The Andaz brand is one I’ve experienced at multiple properties. My Andaz Singapore review covers what the brand does at its most accomplished on a long-haul Asian route — a useful comparison for travellers building an Andaz points strategy across properties.

Andaz Prague Design: Czech Mythology in the Sugar Palace

“What makes Andaz hotels and resorts so entirely unique is the way in which each property taps into its surrounding local culture and neighborhood’s spirit to create an experience for guests that has an unprecedented level of authenticity – one guests can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel.”

This is something I did notice when I stayed at the Andaz Prague. I was impressed with the myriad of thoughtful little design touches throughout the hotel that respected the building’s history and reflected local myths & legends, namely the Golem of Prague, the Slavic princess Libuše, and the two-tailed white lion watching over your dreams.

Andaz Prague Location: Historical Centre and Getting There

The Andaz Prague is housed in the iconic Sugar Palace in the historical centre of Prague. It is only 7 mins walk (according to Google Maps) from the main railway station in Prague. The Old Town Square is within walking distance, along with many other iconic landmarks.

Andaz Prague and the Sugar Palace: A Cultural Monument Reborn

The building that houses Andaz Prague has one of the more extraordinary histories of any hotel in Europe. Completed in 1916 as the headquarters of a sugar trading company — hence the name Sugar Palace — it later housed civil servants during the Communist era and then a bank after Prague’s transition. Recognised as a protected cultural monument in 1993, the building stood essentially empty for nearly two decades until its ambitious transformation into a luxury hotel was completed in 2022.

The architects were not permitted to alter the protected facade, which means the hotel’s dramatic exterior arrives exactly as it was conceived over a century ago. Inside, the design team used this constraint as a creative foundation — the ornate ceiling mouldings, the original parquet floors, and the architectural bones of the building all remain, now in conversation with contemporary Czech art, mythology-inspired details, and the Andaz brand’s characteristic sense of cultural specificity.

Walking into a building with this history and finding it this well-maintained, this alive, and this thoughtfully inhabited is genuinely moving in a way that purpose-built luxury hotels rarely achieve.

Arrival at Andaz Prague: Check-In, Hyatt Privé Perks and First Impressions

I had arrived by train in the afternoon and just walked over to the hotel. On my departure, I got an Uber to the airport and that took about 30 mins. I was offered a welcome drink on arrival (champagne, beer, wine, tea, coffee) and went through the formalities.

I had booked a Hyatt Privé rate that included a 3rd night for free. The Reception team member presented me with the Privé welcome letter and walked me through the perks (Room upgrade, USD100 credit, daily breakfast for two, etc). They confirmed that I had been upgraded to a Standard King View room (more about that later) on the top floor. They then went through the breakfast opening hours, the facilities available, the location of the lifts, etc.

Overall 10/10 for the check in experience. I personally hate it when the process takes too long or when they do not offer enough information (e.g. breakfast hours, location of the lifts, etc) but thankfully that was not the case here.

Andaz Prague Rooms: Views, Tech and the Complimentary Minibar

I was travelling solo and booked an entry-level King Bed room and was upgraded to King Bed View on the top floor. I have ‘Quiet room’ selected on my World of Hyatt profile, which was acknowledged when I checked in. The room was indeed very quiet and I couldn’t hear the tram going by; something that I have seen other guests raise.

I had a view of Prague Castle in the distance and technically the room was overlooking the car park in front of the hotel but I couldn’t see it from my room. The car park was closed and featured an installation for the Signal festival that was taking place in Prague at the time.

While the room was perfectly comfortable for a solo traveler like myself, I would recommend a higher room category for those with more luggage or planning an extended stay. However, the option to unpack and request luggage storage from the hotel staff is always available.

This being an Andaz hotel, you get complimentary mini bar of local non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Coffee (Nespresso) and tea making facilities plus water bottles replenished in the evening for turndown service.

My absolute favourite feature, though, was the motion-sensor-activated night lights. As someone who has often fumbled for light switches in the middle of the night while jetlagged, this thoughtful touch was a welcome relief.

Andaz Prague Restaurants: ZEM, Breakfast and Andaz Hour

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and the Andaz buffet and a la carte selection was really impressive, both from a presentation perspective but also flavourful. The avocado toast was one of the best I’ve ever had. One I will be ordering again next time I stay there.

Dinner was good too, but being a solo diner stuck between two tables of 5-6 people meant that service was a bit hit & miss. This was served at ZEM Prague, where the US$100 credit when you book a Hyatt Privé rate can be used. The manager and assistant manager were great whenever they went past, but I honestly had no idea who the waiter that was supposed to be looking after me was as different people took different part of the order and and others delivered the actual dishes. Which made it difficult to decide how much to tip!

The breakfast at Andaz Prague rivals the best I’ve had at any Hyatt property — including the extraordinary Alila Ubud in Bali and The Sukhothai Bangkok. It is, consistently, the meal the Andaz brand gets most right.

Andaz Prague Spa, Sauna, Fitness and the Pigmentarium Cocktail Bar

I do enjoy a good workout and the fitness centre in the Andaz Prague had everything I needed, offering cardio equipment, weight-training equipment and free weights, yoga mats and associated accessories.

The spa, sauna, and steam room remain some of the finest wellness facilities among Prague’s luxury hotels. The steam room in particular is notably generous in size — a point independently confirmed by multiple recent guests. A note on what has changed since my 2023 stay: the spa operated under the Klara Rott branding at the time of my visit, and the in-room toiletries were also from the Klara Rott natural organic range. The spa is now referred to as Andaz Spa, and recent guest accounts mention Byredo cosmetics in the rooms. I’d recommend confirming current spa branding and treatment menu directly — or simply asking me when you get in touch, as I keep tabs on these details so you don’t have to.

‘Andaz Hour’ takes place every day between 5-6pm. Currently in collaboration with Pigmentarium, you use your sense of smell to select one of three perfumes and the in-house mixologist prepares a complimentary cocktail based on the selected scent. It’s a nice touch and a great place to meet before dinner or to socialise with other hotel guests. A menu featuring some fascinating cocktails is also available. The classic cocktails can also be ordered too.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Book

Dinner at ZEM was good but the service model at my visit was collaborative to the point of being slightly unclear — different team members handled different parts of the order and delivery, which made it difficult to know who to direct questions or requests to. The food more than compensated. For a solo diner this was more noticeable; couples and groups are unlikely to register it as an issue. The breakfast and Andaz Hour cocktail service were both excellent throughout the stay.

FAQ

Q: Is Andaz Prague a good luxury hotel? A: It is consistently regarded as one of the finest luxury hotels in Prague, notable for its location within the historic Sugar Palace, its culturally immersive design drawing on Czech mythology, and the Andaz brand’s signature complimentary minibar stocked with local Czech products. Recent guest reviews rate the breakfast and spa facilities particularly highly. Steve stayed for three nights in 2023 and would return specifically.

Q: Where is Andaz Prague located? A: Andaz Prague sits on Senovážné Square in the heart of Prague’s historical centre. The Old Town Square is within comfortable walking distance, as are Wenceslas Square, the Czech National Museum, and the Municipal House. Prague’s main railway station is approximately 7 minutes on foot — making it one of the most accessible luxury hotels in the city for arrivals by train, including the direct service from Vienna.

Q: What is the Sugar Palace in Prague? A: The Sugar Palace is the historic building housing Andaz Prague — a protected cultural monument completed in 1916 as the headquarters of a sugar trading company. After serving as offices during the Communist era and later a bank, the building stood empty for nearly two decades before its transformation into Andaz Prague in 2022. The protected facade was preserved unchanged throughout the renovation.

Q: What is the Czech mythology design at Andaz Prague? A: The hotel’s interior design draws on three figures from Czech mythology and legend: the Golem of Prague, the Slavic princess Libuše, and the two-tailed white lion. These appear as design motifs throughout the corridors, rooms, and public spaces — the lion reliefs on the walls, the horse imagery, and references in the room design all reflect a commitment to cultural specificity that is the defining characteristic of the Andaz brand at its best.

Q: What is Andaz Hour at Andaz Prague? A: Andaz Hour runs daily between 5–6pm and is a complimentary cocktail experience in collaboration with Pigmentarium, a Czech perfumery. Guests use their sense of smell to select one of three fragrances, and the in-house mixologist prepares a custom cocktail based on the chosen scent. It is one of the most distinctive hotel daily rituals Steve has encountered anywhere, and a genuinely memorable way to begin an evening in Prague.

Q: What perks do you get booking Andaz Prague through a Hyatt Privé advisor? A: Booking through Steve Michailidis as a Hyatt Privé affiliated travel advisor includes a $100 USD property credit applicable to food, beverage, or laundry, complimentary daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to forecasted occupancy, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability, a welcome amenity, free Wi-Fi, and a complimentary airport transfer for suite bookings. There are no booking fees. A 3rd night free promotion was also available at the time of Steve’s stay — current promotions should be confirmed when enquiring.

Q: Is Andaz Prague good for a Christmas visit? A: Exceptionally so. The hotel’s position in the historical centre places you within easy reach of the Old Town Square Christmas market — one of the finest in Europe — and Prague’s architecture in winter is genuinely extraordinary. Steve visited in November as the city was beginning its festive preparations and considers Prague one of his top recommendations for a Central European Christmas market trip.

Is Andaz Prague Worth It?

Of the hotels I visited on that European research trip — and Prague was the final stop — the Andaz was the one I left most reluctantly. That is the most honest review I can offer.

What makes it work is the combination of things the Andaz brand does consistently well and the things this specific building makes possible. The complimentary minibar stocked with Czech Cola and local snacks. The motion-sensor night lights that solve a problem nobody had bothered to solve before. The avocado toast that I am still thinking about. The Andaz Hour with Pigmentarium — a scent-driven cocktail ritual that should frankly be replicated everywhere.

And then the building itself. Sleeping in a protected cultural monument that has been this carefully and lovingly restored, in a city that looks like a fairy tale and sounds like one when the tram goes past at night, is an experience that no purpose-built hotel can offer.

The Hyatt Privé perks — $100 credit, breakfast, upgrade, and complimentary airport transfer on suite bookings — make the value proposition genuinely strong. And if you’re planning a Central European itinerary combining Prague with Vienna or Budapest, I can advise on the full routing and book every property with the appropriate perks in place.

Plan My Trip With Perks →

A note on timing: I visited Andaz Prague in November, as Christmas preparations were beginning across the city. Prague at this time of year is extraordinary — the Christmas markets on Old Town Square are among the finest in Europe, the architecture is particularly atmospheric in the cold light, and the hotel’s position gives you effortless access to all of it. If you’re considering a Central European Christmas market trip and debating between Prague, Vienna, and Budapest — Prague is my recommendation, and Andaz is where I’d stay. The hotel itself embraces the season warmly; ask me about current festive programming when you get in touch.
