Hôtel Belles Rives is one of the most historically significant luxury hotels in the world — the former villa where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote Tender is the Night and hosted the parties that inspired The Great Gatsby, transformed into a hotel in 1929 by the Estène-Chauvin family who still own it today. Awarded 1 Michelin Key and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Virtuoso, this Art Deco property in Juan-les-Pins sits directly on the Mediterranean with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a private beach club, and the legendary Piano Bar Fitzgerald. Reviewed by Steve Michailidis, a London-based luxury travel advisor and Virtuoso affiliated agent, it is the most culturally irreplaceable hotel on the French Riviera — and one of the most distinctive properties in Europe.

Nestled along the glistening shores of the Côte d’Azur, Hôtel Belles Rives in Antibes captures the essence of French Riviera glamour. With its stunning Art Deco architecture and breathtaking Mediterranean views, this Antibes hotel is a timeless destination for luxury travellers. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway or a serene retreat, Hôtel Belles Rives promises an unforgettable experience.

Antibes is a jewel of the French Riviera, offering golden beaches, a rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant dining scene. Hôtel Belles Rives enhances this charm with its unmatched blend of luxury, history, and impeccable service.

This trip and stay at Hôtel Belles Rives marked my first visit to Antibes and one that that I had been really looking forward to for a few months. It was scheduled for a weekend after a busy week in Paris. Additionally, the hotel has been awarded one Michelin Key and my expectations were very high.

Where they met? Read on to find out!

Hôtel Belles Rives and F. Scott Fitzgerald: Where The Great Gatsby Was Born

In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda left New York for the French Riviera and fell in love with a villa called Villa Saint-Louis on the Cap d’Antibes — the building that would become Hôtel Belles Rives. It was here that Fitzgerald wrote Tender is the Night, his final completed novel, and hosted the lavish parties that would eventually become the inspiration for The Great Gatsby.

A plaque in the lobby quotes Fitzgerald directly: “With our being back in a nice villa on my beloved Riviera… I’m happier than I’ve been for years. It’s one of those strange, precious and all too transitory moments when everything in one’s life seems to be going well.”

In 1929 the villa was acquired by the Estène-Chauvin family — who still own it today — and transformed into the first hotel directly on the waterfront of the Côte d’Azur. The family has kept it resolutely independent for nearly a century, which explains why the Art Deco design, the original elevator, the Fitzgerald Piano Bar, and that specific quality of unhurried glamour feel so intact.

When you sit at the bar named after him, looking out at the same Mediterranean that Fitzgerald looked out at while writing two of the twentieth century’s most celebrated novels, the connection is not abstract. It is simply there — in the room, in the light, in the view.

The French Riviera combination I recommend most frequently pairs Belles Rives with Hôtel du Couvent in Nice — two very different properties, both with the kind of historical character that the Côte d’Azur does better than anywhere in the world.

Highlights of Hôtel Belles Rives:

  • Art Deco Architecture: A meticulously preserved 1920s design that transports you to the Roaring Twenties.
  • Unbeatable Location: Close to both Juan-les-Pins and the historic heart of Antibes, yet tucked away for tranquillity.
  • Michelin-Starred Dining: Home to La Passagère, a culinary haven for gourmands.
  • Private Beach Club: Relax in style with direct access to the Mediterranean.

Hôtel Belles Rives Location: Juan-les-Pins, Antibes and Getting There

We were in Paris the week before heading to Antibes and took the high-speed train to the south of France instead of flying; it’s convenient but also greener. The hotel is located about 10-15 mins taxi ride from Antibes train station. Juan-les-Pins train station is located slight closer to the hotel and is served by local trains. In fact, this is where we headed to get our train to Nice airport at the end of our stay.

The hotel location is great as it is walking distance to the busy area of Juan-les-Pins with all its restaurants, bars, and shops, but far enough to be quiet & relaxing. If you’re a walker, the downtown area of Antibes can also be reached on foot in about 30 mins. There you can find a lot more shops and restaurants, a beautiful market of fresh fruit & vegetables, as well as Musée Picasso and Le Fort Carré.

Arrival at Hôtel Belles Rives: First Impressions

Travelling to Hôtel Belles Rives is part of the charm. We opted for the high-speed train from Paris to Antibes—both eco-friendly and scenic. Upon arrival, a quick taxi ride brought us to this elegant property. Check-in was smooth and welcoming, with a guided tour introducing us to the hotel’s rich history and luxurious amenities.

I loved the original elevator and old school key. The keyring is heavy, so make sure you leave it with the concierge when going out exploring.

Departure was equally efficient. The friendly head concierge was able to check us out quickly, as the Reception team was busy. We left our luggage for a couple of hours with them and went for a long walk around the cape, checking out Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc – an Oetker Collection property and one of our partner hotels offering exceptional service and perks when booking through me – along the way the way.

Hôtel Belles Rives: The Art Deco Interior and Fitzgerald Bar

Walking into Hôtel Belles Rives is like travelling back in time to an era of classy art deco and buying a new hat for the flight. As you enter you can see a lot of the original decorative features, with plenty of seating in the lobby. On the left you have the entrance to the restaurant (more about that later), and on the right the Reception and Concierge desks as well as the original elevator – which still works!

At the end of the lobby there is a set of double doors taking you to the terrace and the view of the sea beyond. On the right of those doors, there’s a small room (a “cosy nook”) with comfortable seating and photographs of celebrities and well-known personalities that have stayed or visited the hotel. Next to it is the bar.

Whether you are relaxing in the inviting lobby or exploring the grounds, Hôtel Belles Rives consistently impresses with its attention to detail and dedication to guest satisfaction.

If you like art deco this place is just sublime. Even if you are not into art deco one cannot help noticing how well everything is put together. A real visual treat!

Hôtel Belles Rives Rooms: Sea Views, Penhaligon’s and What to Expect

We were upgraded to a Deluxe Sea View room and walking through the door one cannot help noticing the pièce de résistance of the Hôtel Belles Rives … the sea view is just captivating and draws you in. Whether day or night, looking out at sea has a calming effect for me.

Looking in, the decoration is a very interesting mix of styles and colours. Does it all go well together? Yes. Does it need a little TLC? Also yes.

The room was very comfortable (though the bed was slightly too short for me) and a full size sofa meant that one can relax without having to sit on the bed all the time. A welcome amenity of fresh fruit & berries, as well as a bottle of Rosé wine was provided. Complimentary tea bags were also provided and there is a Nespresso machine in the room, but do note that capsules are charged at €4 each.

The bathroom was clean and had everything one could ask for but it really needed refurbishment and modernisation. The toiletries provided are by Penhaligon’s.

Interested in a Deluxe Sea View room or one of the higher suites with a private terrace? Get in touch for a free quote — I can advise on room category, confirm Virtuoso availability for your dates, and ensure the beach sun beds, breakfast, and $100 F&B credit are included from arrival.

Hôtel Belles Rives Restaurants: La Passagère, Breakfast and Piano Bar Fitzgerald

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and the breakfast at Hôtel Belles Rives is just sublime. The array of buffet options and the breathtaking view of the coastline make it an experience experience to be savoured and not rushed. There is a variety of freshly baked pastries (you’re in France afterall!) fruit and freshly-squeezed juices, an a-la-carte menu for freshly prepared items to your liking, and very attentive waiting staff.

Take your time, sit back, relax, and enjoy another cup of tea/coffee and the view.

For guests who appreciate a sense of place, Hôtel Belles Rives offers a breakfast experience that truly highlights the charm and hospitality unique to Hôtel Belles Rives.

In the evening, guests are invited to enjoy the culinary experience at the Michelin-starred restaurant La Passagère, where Chef Aurélien Véquaud creates a symphony of flavors. The restaurant offers exceptional menus and refined elegance, providing the perfect setting for a memorable dining experience.

As the sun sets over the Mediterranean, diners can indulge in gourmet creations accompanied by a carefully curated selection of wines. Due to high demand, advance reservation is highly recommended for an evening at La Passagère.

Piano Bar Fitzgerald is a unique place on the Côte d’Azur. It’s designed in the style of a 1930s ocean liner with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. In line with the rest of the hotel, the bar is an intimate space that offers a journey back in time to the Art Deco period, with restored antique and custom-designed pieces, a black marble countertop, original oak floors and windows, grand chandeliers, and a fresco depicting the French Riviera. A limited selection of dinner items are also available to enjoy in a more relaxed atmosphere than the restaurant.

Hôtel Belles Rives Beach Club, Spa and Facilities

Travelling to the French Riviera off-season is a relaxing experience, but the south of France truly comes alive in summer. Many luxury hotels have their own beach clubs, and Hôtel Belles Rives is no exception. With its beach huts, pontoon with a private landing stage, and solarium, the private beach at Hôtel Belles Rives is a wonderful setting for families, couples, friends, and even solo travellers.

It offers a secure place for children to play, while parents can swim or sunbathe, and large groups can enjoy a restaurant meal to celebrate the simple pleasure of gathering together for the holidays. Sun beds are available to rents by the day and the beach club is open to the public. As a hotel guest booking a Virtuoso room rate through me, the cost of the sun bed rental is included.

Hôtel Belles Rives is dedicated to creating memorable moments for every guest, ensuring your time at Hôtel Belles Rives is as relaxing as it is unforgettable.

No stay at a five-star hotel is complete without a visit to the spa. The Valmont Beauty Corner offers exclusive bespoke skin & body treatments. These treatments are exclusively developed for Hôtel Belles Rives, offering the ultimate pampering experience.

Finally, There is a glass cabinet in the Lobby area with different souvenirs available for purchase. Branded and very classy, they reflect the Hôtel Belles Rives‘ Art Deco style. You can even buy the key ring shown further up in the review.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Book

Hôtel Belles Rives is genuinely historic, and that character comes with honest tradeoffs worth knowing before you arrive.

The rooms vary considerably. Sea-facing rooms on the upper floors with balconies are where the hotel is unambiguously at its best — the view draws you in from the moment you open the door and the Art Deco detailing is beautifully maintained throughout. Some bathrooms, however, are showing their age and would benefit from the same careful restoration applied to the public spaces. Worth mentioning to me at the time of booking: I can advise on specific room categories that represent the most recently refreshed accommodation.

The Nespresso capsules in the room are charged at €4 each, which feels incongruous in a hotel at this price point. A small note worth knowing — the complimentary tea bags are a better choice if you’re making multiple drinks per day.

Neither point changes my recommendation. They are simply the honest observations of someone who wants you to arrive informed.

FAQ

Q: What is the F. Scott Fitzgerald connection to Hôtel Belles Rives? A: Hôtel Belles Rives occupies the former Villa Saint-Louis, where F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda lived from 1925 to 1929. During this period Fitzgerald wrote Tender is the Night, his final completed novel, and hosted the lavish parties on the Côte d’Azur that became the inspiration for The Great Gatsby. The villa was converted into a hotel in 1929 by the Estène-Chauvin family, who still own and operate it today. A plaque in the lobby features a direct quote from Fitzgerald about his happiness at the Riviera. The Piano Bar is named in his honour.

Q: Is Hôtel Belles Rives the inspiration for The Great Gatsby? A: The parties Fitzgerald hosted at Villa Saint-Louis — the building now known as Hôtel Belles Rives — are widely regarded as one of the inspirations for the Gatsby parties. Fitzgerald spent his most creatively productive Riviera years here, and the Mediterranean light, the glamour of the Jazz Age Côte d’Azur, and the social world he observed from this address are all present in the novel. A plaque in the lobby preserves his own words about the happiness he found here.

Q: Is Hôtel Belles Rives worth the price? A: It offers exceptional value in the off-season when the Virtuoso perks — breakfast, $100 F&B credit, and beach sun beds — offset a significant portion of the room rate. In peak summer the hotel is at its most atmospheric but also at its most expensive. Steve’s recommendation: visit in May, early June, or September for the best combination of weather, atmosphere, and value. The Michelin Key is well-deserved and La Passagère alone justifies building an evening around a stay.

Q: What is La Passagère restaurant at Hôtel Belles Rives? A: La Passagère is the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, led by Chef Aurélien Véquaud, serving refined Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on locally sourced seafood and seasonal produce. The terrace overlooks the Mediterranean directly, making it one of the most atmospheric dining settings on the Côte d’Azur. Reservations are essential and should be made well in advance during the summer season. The piano bar adjacent to the restaurant provides a more relaxed alternative for lighter dining and cocktails.

Q: What are the Virtuoso perks at Hôtel Belles Rives? A: Booking through Steve Michailidis as a Virtuoso affiliated travel advisor includes daily buffet breakfast for two, a $100 USD equivalent food and beverage credit per stay, complimentary beach sun beds on the private beach club (an inclusion not available through direct booking), a room upgrade subject to availability, and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability. There are no booking fees.

Q: Is Hôtel Belles Rives good for an off-season visit? A: Exceptionally so — and Steve’s preferred time to visit. The hotel has a quieter, more intimate atmosphere outside the peak summer season, the Virtuoso perks represent proportionally greater value against the room rate, and the Côte d’Azur in May, early June, or September offers warm weather without the July and August crowds. The Piano Bar Fitzgerald and La Passagère are open year-round, and the beach club operates in season.

Q: How do you get to Hôtel Belles Rives from Paris? A: The TGV high-speed train from Paris to Antibes takes approximately five and a half hours and is Steve’s recommended route — scenic, eco-friendly, and more relaxing than flying. Juan-les-Pins station is slightly closer to the hotel than Antibes and is served by local trains; a short taxi completes the journey. Nice Airport is approximately 25 minutes by taxi for those flying in.

Is Hôtel Belles Rives Worth It?

There are hotels with history. And then there is Hôtel Belles Rives — a place where the history is so specific and so present that it changes how you experience everything else about the stay.

Sitting at the Piano Bar Fitzgerald as the sun sets over the Mediterranean, looking out at the same view that Fitzgerald looked out at while writing two of the most celebrated novels of the twentieth century, you understand why he said he had never been happier. The light at that hour is extraordinary. The bar is intimate in the way only a room that has existed for a century can be. And the fact that the Estène-Chauvin family have kept this place resolutely independent for nearly a hundred years — refusing the grand hotel formula, maintaining the Art Deco intact, serving the same coastline view — is a form of cultural stewardship that deserves recognition.

La Passagère is the finest Michelin-starred restaurant on the Côte d’Azur for setting alone, and the cooking matches it. The private beach club with the pontoon stretching into the Mediterranean is the most civilised version of the beach club concept I have encountered. And the off-season value, with Virtuoso perks covering breakfast, $100 F&B credit, and beach sun beds, makes the experience accessible in a way that peak summer rates do not always suggest.

Some bathrooms need attention and the Nespresso capsules are overpriced. Neither changes the verdict.

For the French Riviera, for literary history, for Art Deco at its most authentically preserved — this is the only address. Get in touch and I’ll advise on combining Belles Rives with Monaco, Cannes, or a few days in Nice — I know the region well and can book every property with exclusive perks.
