The Chelsea Townhouse is London’s most intimate Relais & Châteaux property — a boutique hotel of 36 rooms and suites across three beautifully restored Victorian townhouses in the heart of Chelsea, opened in September 2023 and already established as one of the finest small hotels in the city. Reviewed by Steve Michailidis, a London-based luxury travel advisor who visits London hotels almost every week and previously lived minutes from this address, it stands apart from the capital’s larger luxury properties through its exceptional neighbourhood positioning steps from King’s Road and Pavilion Road, its exclusive access to the private Cadogan Gardens for hotel guests, and a level of residential intimacy that no conventional London hotel can replicate. For discerning travellers seeking something genuinely different from the grand hotel experience — boutique, quiet, deeply local — it is the most compelling option in Chelsea.

If you’re searching for an elegant haven in one of London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, The Chelsea Townhouse offers an experience that feels both luxurious and personal. With its prime location in Chelsea, just a stone’s throw from Pavilion Road and the iconic King’s Road, this boutique hotel has quickly established itself as one of the finest options for discerning travellers since its opening in September 2023.

The Chelsea Townhouse: Three Victorian Townhouses, One Remarkable Hotel

The Chelsea Townhouse is not just a hotel—it’s a collection of three beautifully restored townhouses, offering 36 rooms and suites that blend heritage charm with contemporary elegance. Whether you’re a family looking for spacious accommodation for an extended and comfortable stay in London or a couple looking for a chic London retreat, The Chelsea Townhouse caters to a variety of needs.

Each guest key grants access to all three townhouses, creating the sense of staying in a private residence. For those seeking exclusivity, the property can be booked as a full buyout, making it perfect for special occasions or private events.

Families will appreciate the eight dedicated setups designed for connected living, while those seeking an elevated stay can enjoy one of the four suites with direct access to the private Cadogan Gardens—a unique feature not found in other London hotels.

The Chelsea Townhouse Location: King’s Road, Pavilion Road and Beyond

Set in a tranquil pocket of Chelsea, this boutique hotel is ideally situated for exploring some of London’s finest attractions. I used to live about 10 mins walk away and this location is very much a “hidden gem” – a quiet location but very much in the heart of the action.

Just a minute’s walk from Pavilion Road – and its eclectic selection of shops and restaurants – and King’s Road, guests can indulge in boutique shopping, chic cafés, and vibrant dining spots. For luxury shoppers, Harrods, Sloane Street, and Knightsbridge are within easy reach.

Culture enthusiasts will love the proximity to the V&A Museum, Royal Albert Hall, and the Saatchi Gallery. Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, The Chelsea Townhouse positions you at the heart of London’s most coveted area.

For visitors combining Chelsea with a wider London itinerary, my review of The Langham London covers the finest option on Regent Street — the two properties together represent the full range of what London luxury hospitality can offer, from grand historic landmark to intimate neighbourhood retreat.

Design and Atmosphere at The Chelsea Townhouse

Formerly the Draycott Hotel, The Chelsea Townhouse retains its historic charm while feeling refreshingly new. Many of the original pieces of artwork and select furniture have been thoughtfully preserved, seamlessly blending with the hotel’s chic, updated interiors. The result is a property that feels both timeless and contemporary, steeped in character yet undeniably fresh.

It also feels refreshing! I visit London hotels almost every week and to see this level of characters and modern amenities combined so well is rare.

The Garden Room, a highlight of the property, offers a light space to enjoy breakfast, brunch (coming soon!), a hot beverage and something sweet in the afternoon, or evening drinks. For more intimate gatherings (or that Zoom call that we all need to join without disturbing others), the cosy Front Room is the perfect retreat.

It is worth noting that the property does not have its own gym but guests can access facilities (including fitness suite) at its sister hotel, 11 Cadogan Gardens,  conveniently located just around the corner. Of course, any food & drink consumed can be charged directly to your room.

The Chelsea Townhouse Rooms: Suites, Studios and the Details That Matter

At The Chelsea Townhouse, quiet luxury lies in the details. From minibars included in the rate upon arrival to bespoke Welcome amenities, the hotel ensures every guest feels pampered. Dog lovers will be pleased to know the property is dog-friendly, unfortunately our furry friends are not permitted in the garden.

The welcome amenity includes the hotel’s signature Chelsea bun — freshly made, warm if timed right, and the most precisely local welcome gesture of any hotel I’ve reviewed in the city. It’s a small thing. It’s also exactly right.

For those seeking more expansive stays, the Junior Suite can be connected to a studio with a kitchenette, providing a perfect setup for longer visits. And with Chelsea King rooms making up 40% of the inventory, there’s a focus on offering a generous, comfortable experience at every level. The entry-level rooms are small but perfectly adequate for a cosy weekend away with your loved one.

Four suites at The Chelsea Townhouse offer something no other London hotel can match: direct access to Cadogan Gardens, the private garden square that Chelsea residents pay dearly for the privilege of using. For guests in these suites, it’s simply part of the stay — a quiet, green sanctuary in one of London’s most exclusive postcodes, entirely private, entirely unhurried. If you’re choosing between room categories, this alone justifies the upgrade.

The Chelsea Townhouse and Relais & Châteaux: What It Means for Your Stay

As part of the Relais & Châteaux family, The Chelsea Townhouse offers the impeccable service and attention to detail synonymous with the brand. Together with 11 Cadogan Gardens, the two properties function like a boutique resort, with one team managing both hotels and seamless charging privileges across facilities.

Relais & Châteaux membership is one of the most reliable quality signals in independent hospitality — the same assurance I look for when recommending Grand Hôtel Stockholm and Hôtel du Couvent in Nice, both fellow members of the collection.

FAQ

Q: Is The Chelsea Townhouse the best boutique hotel in Chelsea? A: It is the most characterful and carefully considered boutique hotel in the neighbourhood — a Relais & Châteaux property across three restored Victorian townhouses, steps from King’s Road and Pavilion Road, with a residential intimacy that no larger London hotel can replicate. As someone who visits London hotels almost every week and previously lived minutes from this address, Steve considers it the strongest boutique option in Chelsea for travellers who want something genuinely distinct from the grand hotel experience.

Q: What makes The Chelsea Townhouse different from other London luxury hotels? A: Several things set it apart. It is one of the very few London hotels with access to the private Cadogan Gardens — available to guests in the four garden-access suites and impossible to experience any other way. The scale is genuinely intimate at 36 rooms across three townhouses, with a single team managing both The Chelsea Townhouse and its sister property 11 Cadogan Gardens. The former Draycott Hotel’s original artwork and furniture have been preserved and integrated with the new design. And the complimentary minibar on arrival is a rare inclusion at this price point in London.

Q: Where exactly is The Chelsea Townhouse located? A: The hotel sits in a quiet residential pocket of Chelsea, a minute’s walk from Pavilion Road and its artisan shops and cafés, and steps from King’s Road. Harrods, Sloane Street, and Knightsbridge are within easy reach. The V&A Museum, Royal Albert Hall, and Saatchi Gallery are all accessible on foot or by a short taxi. Sloane Square Underground station is the nearest tube stop.

Q: Does The Chelsea Townhouse have a restaurant? A: The Garden Room serves breakfast, afternoon refreshments, and evening drinks in a light, airy space that anchors the social life of the hotel. It does not operate as a full-service restaurant for dinner, but the immediate neighbourhood — Pavilion Road and King’s Road — offers some of London’s finest independent restaurants within walking distance. Any food and drink at sister hotel 11 Cadogan Gardens can be charged directly to the room.

Q: Does The Chelsea Townhouse have a gym? A: The hotel does not have its own gym on-site, but guests have full access to the fitness facilities at 11 Cadogan Gardens, the sister property located just around the corner. Charges can be applied directly to the room.

Q: Is The Chelsea Townhouse dog-friendly? A: Yes — the hotel welcomes dogs, though they are not permitted in the private garden. It is one of the more genuinely dog-friendly boutique hotels in central London, which given the neighbourhood’s notably dog-loving character feels entirely appropriate.

Q: What perks do you get booking The Chelsea Townhouse through a travel advisor? A: Booking through Steve Michailidis includes complimentary daily breakfast, a half bottle of champagne, and a personalised welcome note. There are no booking fees.

Q: What is Relais & Châteaux and why does it matter for The Chelsea Townhouse? A: Relais & Châteaux is one of the world’s most prestigious independent hotel and restaurant collections, with membership requiring exceptional standards of character, cuisine, and service. The Chelsea Townhouse’s membership signals a quality benchmark that distinguishes it from the broader boutique hotel market in London — it is the only Relais & Châteaux property in Chelsea.

Is The Chelsea Townhouse Worth It?

London has hundreds of luxury hotels. What it has very few of is luxury hotels that feel like a home you’ve just been lent by a well-travelled friend who happens to own three adjoining Chelsea townhouses.

That is the quality The Chelsea Townhouse has found in its short existence — and having visited London hotels almost every week and lived minutes from this address, I can say with some confidence that it is doing something genuinely rare. The neighbourhood positioning is faultless. The Cadogan Gardens access for suite guests is impossible to replicate anywhere else in the city. The Chelsea bun on arrival is the most precisely local welcome gesture in London hospitality.

As a Relais & Châteaux property, it carries the assurance of genuine independent quality standards — not a brand promise, but a vetted benchmark. And at 36 rooms across three townhouses, there is no version of this stay that feels anonymous or transactional.

For a London staycation, a special occasion, a family visit to the city, or simply a weekend that feels like the best possible version of what Chelsea has always been — considered, quiet, beautiful — this is the address I would give you.

Booking through me includes complimentary breakfast, champagne, and a welcome note — all confirmed before arrival, at no extra cost and no booking fee.

Planning a longer London stay or combining the city with a wider UK itinerary? Virgin Hotels Edinburgh pairs naturally with a Chelsea base — and I can advise on the full routing.

A note on perspective: I live in London, visit hotels here almost every week, and used to live a 10-minute walk from this address. When I review a Chelsea hotel, I’m measuring it against everything else the neighbourhood offers — not discovering it for the first time. The Chelsea Townhouse passes that test comfortably.
