A First-Day Walking Route Through Battersea, Chelsea, Knightsbridge and the West End
If you’re visiting London for the first time and want a gentle introduction to the city, this curated walking route offers a relaxed and engaging way to understand the layout of London’s most iconic neighbourhoods. It’s perfect for travellers who prefer a local, insider perspective rather than a traditional guided tour.
This route begins in Battersea, winds through Chelsea and Knightsbridge, and finishes in Piccadilly, Regent Street, Soho and Covent Garden. Along the way you’ll see blue plaques, luxury hotels, world-class shops, cafés, bookshops and cultural landmarks. It’s a wonderful first-day orientation for visitors who want to experience the “real London.”
Obviously when I show my friends and family around I make changes to the itinerary and our stops based on my guests’ interests but this should give you a good baseline to start with. You can also extend all the way to Tower Bridge to see it illuminated in the evening, or even follow the route in reverse.
Battersea to Chelsea
Riverside Breakfast and a Blue-Plaque Moment
A relaxed morning at Dishoom Battersea sets the tone. Think fluffy naan rolls, comforting chai, and views of the Battersea Power Station development. This riverside destination offers seasonal touches like an ice rink in winter and outdoor terraces in summer.

As you wander towards Chelsea, look out for London blue plaques. Those round signs that indicate historical homes. Along this route you may spot plaques linked to:
- Oscar Wilde (Tite Street, Chelsea)
- Sir Thomas More (Chelsea Embankment)
These plaques highlight the artists, thinkers and political figures who shaped London, adding a layer of storytelling to your walk.
Chelsea itself feels polished and village-like. Fashion houses, florists, galleries and smart side streets lead naturally towards Sloane Street, where luxury lives quietly behind immaculate facades. Or walk down Pavilion Road and grab a coffee and pastry from Bread Ahead or Ottolenghi on this cute pedestrian road just steps away from Sloane Square.
Knightsbridge: Luxury, Pastries and Iconic London Shopping
This area is synonymous with high-end London. Stepping into Harrods is a sensory moment – the perfume hall, the food hall, the theatre of retail. Don’t miss the main escalators. You can’t miss the Egyptian theme!
From here you can choose your own indulgent interlude:
- Pastries at Cédric Grolet at The Berkeley
- Afternoon tea at The Lanesborough
- A walk through Hyde Park (and Winter Wonderland in festive months)
This part of the day introduces guests to the London of luxury hotels, heritage brands and refined hospitality.

Piccadilly, Regent Street and Soho
Classic Landmarks and the Creative Heart of the West End
Your route continues down Piccadilly. Don’t miss:
- Burlington Arcade for upmarket shopping and instagram-worthy photos
- Fortnum & Mason for tea, hampers and elegant gifts
- Hatchards Bookshop, loved for its literary heritage
- Piccadilly Circus, the gateway to the West End
Along the way, more blue plaques help anchor the walk in history. Watch for:
- Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes
- Noël Coward, playwright, composer and quintessentially London
Turn onto Regent Street for film-set architecture and a stop at Hamleys, before sliding towards Liberty London and on into Carnaby Street and Soho. Cocktails, bakeries, late-night ramen, live jazz, neon, theatre tickets – everything feels close here.
Finish in China Town, Leicester Square or Covent Garden, depending on appetite and energy.

A Cinematic Ending: The Uber Boat to Battersea
One brilliant finale (especially on a sunny day) is the Uber Boat from Westminster to Battersea Power Station. It’s a calm, scenic way to reset and return home, and gives visitors a sense of how London is connected by the Thames.
