Review: Virgin Hotels Edinburgh | Stay in the Heart of the Old Town

What happens when a bold global brand settles into one of Europe’s most historic capitals? I arrived at Virgin Hotels Edinburgh curious to see how the signature identity would sit within the city’s medieval fabric.

As a Virgin property, I anticipated red accents at every turn. Instead, the aesthetic is more considered and elegant. Yes, the front door makes a statement in red. The ‘chamber’ doors follow suit. A Smeg fridge adds a playful flash in the corner of the room. But the wider palette across the public areas and chambers is layered and artistic, filled with eclectic pieces that feel curated rather than themed, but also provide a cheeky ‘nod’ to the Virgin brand’s start and early life.

An impressive red-carpeted staircase greets you on arrival, drawing you upward into a striking Rotunda. Several chambers are located here, including ‘Richard’s Flat’. It’s instagrammable but also chic.

The hotel is formed of three interconnected historic buildings. Navigating between spaces can take a moment to master, especially as Reception sits on level three. Once orientated, it becomes intuitive.

Location, location, location

Step outside and you are immersed in the Old Town. The Royal Mile is just around the corner. Edinburgh Castle is within walking distance. So is the National Museum of Scotland.

For both first-time visitors and seasoned Scotland enthusiasts, this is one of the best city-centre locations. Edinburgh itself is built on an extinct volcano, and that dramatic topography shapes every stroll.

Recognised in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 and ranked #4 Best Hotel in the United Kingdom, the hotel has quickly cemented its reputation within the luxury landscape.

Chambers That Redefine the Standard Room

The rooms here are called “Chambers”, and each layout feels distinct, particularly in the main building. I stayed in Chamber 909 and entering directly in the bathroom felt a little unusual but walking around the corner I was impressed by the size of the bedroom.

There is a separate WC and a walk-in rain shower. An open wardrobe keeps the space practical as I did not need to leave my suitcase on the floor. A curtain discreetly separates the bathroom area from the bedroom when required. It’s practical without compromising style.

A yoga mat is provided (and more importantly there is actually more than enough room to do yoga without hitting any furniture), alongside daily replenished still and sparkling water. Toiletries are by Arran, a Scottish brand that subtly anchors you to the destination. Branded bathrobes and slippers are also provided.

Then there is the bed. My friends called it “Best Bed Ever” and I can see why! It was comfortable enough that I found myself lifting the bedding to inspect the mattress and topper, with the intention of buying them for home.

A small but clever detail. The in-room alarm clock projects the time onto the ceiling. You never have to fumble for your phone in the night.

Dining That Celebrates Scotland With Personality

Breakfast is served in Eve. The buffet is carefully curated, balancing international options with local favourites. Yes, haggis makes an appearance. There is an egg station for dishes cooked to order, alongside an à la carte selection featuring Scottish porridge oats, black pudding and waffles made on demand.

During the day and evening, Eve transitions into an Italian restaurant. They also host pasta-making classes, which are ideal for a group of friends seeking something interactive and memorable.

Commons Club offers a menu rooted in Scottish produce. Think oysters, Loch Tay salmon, Scottish lobster and Orkney scallops. If you are dining here, reserve the chef’s table for a more immersive experience.

For dessert, I recommend the Cranachan. Toasted oats, panna cotta, raspberries and honeycomb combine into a dish that feels both traditional and refined.

The cosy bar attracts both residents and locals, with talented mixologists crafting thoughtful cocktails.

Facilities Designed for Modern Travellers

The fitness suite on level 3 is accessible 24 hours a day, making it easy to maintain routine regardless of schedule.

Head to level 7 for the roof terrace, where views stretch towards Edinburgh Castle and across the Old Town rooftops. Grab a book and a cup of coffee/tea and relax in the heart of Edinburgh Old Town. The views from the roof terrace are particularly atmospheric at dusk.

For meetings or a relaxed pause, the Funny Library provides comfortable seating and shelves stacked high with Scottish titles.

Looking ahead, a spa is scheduled to open in January 2027, further enhancing the hotel’s wellness offering.
